Tribute to Alan Mayor

We’re sorry to have to pass on the news to club members of the death of Alan Mayor. Alan joined the club in 1984 and played with distinction for the 1st XI, also serving as Club President during the 2001/02 season. However, his time at the club is rightly celebrated for his major role in setting up our highly successful juniors in 1988. Alan’s drive and enthusiasm was an essential part of getting us up and running and also our initial and ongoing success. By the time he “hung up his stick” in 1995, we were well established as a top junior club in the county and beyond. His influence could be seen by the number of county championship pennants that used to be on display in the clubhouse. In that time, he was responsible for developing the skills of two Richardson families (including an Olympic champion) among many others. He also turned out for a couple of seasons to help out our junior development teams before following his passion for golf. Overall he made a massive contribution to our club.

I first met Alan whilst playing for Notts U19’s way back in the 70’s. Even at a young age, Alan was a commanding sweeper - a great passer of the ball with all the requisite stick skills - fiercely competitive. He played a number of seasons in Beeston 1st team before moving to WBHC. It’s probably a little known fact that he played a great part in persuading me to join WB. My first year in the 1st team proved to be Alan’s last. He then went on to play a major part in the setting up of our junior section and put lots of time & effort into driving this forward. He also umpired games at the top end of the Club and spent many Saturdays proudly watching his son, Arun, play for the 1st team. He loved the Club and will always be held in high regard for all his contributions.
On behalf of the Club, sincere condolences to Alan’s wife, Val, Arun & all the family.
